Specification support
We help project officers, designers and contractors specify the right timber for the conditions, using the ratings on our Australian Hardwoods poster.
- Durability class
- Class 1 (very durable) to Class 4 (non-durable), matched to above-ground or in-ground use.
- Stress grade
- F-grades for structural work, with F14 and above recommended for decking, joists and bearers.
- Treatment and hazard level
- H1 (indoor) to H6 (marine, in sea water), set by exposure.
- Bushfire attack level
- BAL-LOW to BAL-FZ, with species matched to the site's rating.
Playground and child-contact timber
Treatment choice matters wherever children play. Our poster sets out the rules we follow:
- ACQ treatment is arsenic-free and approved for playgrounds. It suits H3 to H5 and can go in ground or fresh water. It corrodes mild-steel fixings, so we specify the hardware to match.
- CCA treatment has not been used in child-contact areas since 2005.
- Naturally durable species such as Class 1 hardwoods are another option, depending on the design and exposure.
Compliance and provenance documents
We prepare the paperwork that tenders, specifications and audits ask for:
- Treatment certificates
- Grading stamps
- Provenance records
- Species verification
- Technical specifications and Australian Standards references

Common questions
Which timber treatment is suitable for playgrounds?
ACQ is arsenic-free and approved for playgrounds. CCA has not been used in child-contact areas since 2005. Naturally durable Class 1 species are another option, depending on the design and exposure.
What documents can you supply for tenders and audits?
Treatment certificates, grading stamps, provenance records, species verification, and technical specifications that reference Australian Standards. Our business policies are also available on request.
Are you a registered government supplier?
Yes. Durable Hardwoods is a registered and panel supplier to government and is fully insured.
How often should jetty and boardwalk timber be inspected?
Inspect quarterly for marine borer damage, loose fixings and structural integrity. Remove marine growth promptly, rinse saltwater structures regularly to stop salt build-up corroding fixings, and replace damaged boards straight away. We offer maintenance, inspection and condition reporting for public assets.
What fixings should be used on coastal boardwalks?
Grade 316 stainless steel for every fixing on structures over or near water, without exception. A structural engineer's specification is recommended for marine structures.
