Unless timber is stamped with a structural rating from the mill, or the mill has supplied a ‘certificate of compliance’ for the order , or has been graded by a ‘certified timber grader’ with a written report, it is ungraded timber.  When using ungraded timber the responsibility falls on the installer/ purchaser, for any resulting litigation in the case of product failure and related injury and property damage.

Most States in Australia have hardwood forests suitable for joinery and construction. These states have professionals experienced with most species available. South Australia has virtually no  suitable hardwood forests and traditionally back-loaded  jarrah  from W.A , which is running out, and importing south east Asian kapur, meranti and American western red cedar.

As a result of this we have trade skill- set with knowledge in treated pine, nail guns and a public expectation of cheap costs in building timber. Fire rated and better quality timbers are now available.

Also there is increasing demand by architects, specifiers and the public, for timber merchants to supply timbers that work well in the eastern states, but perform poorly in dry climates. Especially if installed without appropriate acclimatising coatings or leading into Summer or during the drier months.

Most merchants, builders and carpenters generally do not have the experience to quote appropriately or install properly or have the working knowledge to give advice, or fix problems.

Builders and merchants will often not offer to supply these species, instead move to cheap imported laminated engineered timber products that have no warranties on the glue, giving a quarter of the life of their solid timber alternatives. The exceptions are laminated vic- ash and cypress, which are made in Australia.

Please research your Architect, Builder or carpenter well. Actually visit their works. Photos of their projects on completion may not show the later problems associated with poor installation, inappropriate timber species or timber supplier choice.
